Chapter 2: The Envelope That Changed the Room

The judge leaned forward.
“Emily, why did you draw that heart?”
“Because Daddy didn’t do the bad thing.”
Sarah’s face tightened.
“She’s five.
She doesn’t understand.”
Emily grabbed my cuffed hand.
“I do understand.
Mommy told me what to say.”
My breath caught.
“Emily, come here now,” Sarah demanded.
“No!” Emily hid behind me.
“Daddy wasn’t at our house when the window broke.
He was at Grandma’s.”
The prosecutor stopped writing.
The judge turned to Sarah.
“You testified that your daughter saw Michael outside your home.”
“She’s confused,” Sarah replied quickly.
“He frightened her.”
Emily shook her head.
“Mommy said I couldn’t see Daddy again if I told.”

Her lawyer pulled her back, but it was too late.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
A bailiff hurried inside carrying a sealed envelope.
“Your Honor, this was delivered ten minutes ago.
It contains security footage from Michael’s mother’s building.”
Sarah went pale.
The judge opened the envelope, read the note inside, and looked directly at her.
“Mrs.
Carter,” he said slowly, “you may want to speak with your attorney before I play this recording.”
Sarah’s lawyer whispered, “What did you do?”
