Chapter 3: The Woman in the Recording

Judge Mercer handed the drive to the clerk.
“Play it from 7:30.”
The screen showed the entrance to my mother’s apartment building.
At 7:41, I walked through the doors carrying groceries.
My attorney, Naomi Price, stood.
“The window at Sarah’s home was broken at 8:16.”
Prosecutor Hall pointed to the screen.
“Does the camera cover every exit?”
“No,” Sarah said quickly.
“There’s a rear stairwell.”
Judge Mercer looked at her.
“I asked the prosecutor.”
Sarah’s lawyer touched her arm.
“Please stop talking.”
The video continued.
At 7:46, I appeared through the glass doors of the laundry room with my mother, Ruth.
At 8:03, I carried a basket upstairs.
At 8:27, I returned with an empty basket.
Naomi faced Sarah.
“You told police Michael was outside your house at 8:16.
How could you identify him?”
“I saw his jacket and tattoos.”
“Through a dark window?”
“I know what my ex-husband looks like.”
“You also testified that you never left your house that evening.”
“I didn’t.”
The clerk moved the recording forward.
At 9:06, a silver car stopped outside my mother’s building.
Sarah stepped out.
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
“That isn’t possible,” Sarah whispered.
The image was clear.
She crossed the pavement, glanced toward the camera, and handed a large envelope to a man waiting near the entrance.
Naomi froze the frame.
“Who is that?”
Sarah gripped the table.
“I don’t know.”
I leaned toward my attorney.
“That’s Daniel Pike.”
Sarah’s head snapped toward me.
Daniel had been introduced to Emily as Mommy’s friend.
He was also the man who claimed he had seen me running from Sarah’s house.
Judge Mercer looked down at the police report.
“Mrs.
Carter, why were you at Ruth Carter’s building less than an hour after calling the police?”
“I went to find Michael.”
“You just said you never left home.”
“I was confused about the time.”
Naomi stepped closer.
“What was inside the envelope?”
“Nothing important.”
“Then why deny knowing the man who received it?”
Sarah turned toward me.
“You arranged this.”
“From handcuffs?” I asked.
“You’ve been manipulating Emily for months.”
“You stopped me from speaking to her.”
“Because she was afraid of you.”
Emily’s voice came from the witness room doorway.
“No, Mommy.
I was afraid of making you angry.”
Sarah’s lawyer closed his eyes.
Judge Mercer struck the bench once.
“Remove the child from this exchange.”
The court advocate guided Emily away.
She looked back at me and touched her cheek where she had drawn my heart.
Prosecutor Hall rose with the police report in his hand.
“Your Honor, Daniel Pike is not merely a witness.
His statement is the reason officers searched Michael’s truck.”
“And what did they find?” Judge Mercer asked.
“A jacket matching the one described by Sarah.”
I looked at Naomi.
“That jacket disappeared from my garage months ago.”
Sarah smiled for the first time since the video started.
Judge Mercer turned to the bailiff.

“Bring Daniel Pike into this courtroom.”
The doors opened, and Daniel walked in wearing the same watch visible in Sarah’s recording.
